WHAT ARE STRETCH MARKS?

Elastic and collagen fibers are essential components that provide structural support and elasticity to the skin. Stretch marks arise when the dermis an inflammatory response, leading to the disruption of these fibers and the subsequent formation of scars that tend to atrophy over.

Stretch marks are generally classified into two categories:

Red or Pink Stretch Marks: Indicative of an active inflammatory.

White Stretch Marks: Resulting from skin atrophy.

The skin, recognized as the largest organ of the human body has primary functions of protection, defense, and temperature regulation It comprises three distinct layers, each with specific characteristics and functions:

Epidermis: The outermost layer, visible to the naked eye, which safeguards against external damage and minimizes water loss while preventing the ingress of harmful substances and.

Dermis: The middle layer, composed of fibrous proteins, collagen, elastin, and colloidal gel, which imparts tone, elasticity, and structural balance to the skin.

Hypodermis: The deepest layer, consisting of adipose tissue, which provides support to the dermis and epidermis, aids in temperature regulation, and serves as reservoir for energy necessary for vital bodily functions.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF STRETCH MARKS?

Stretch marks result from stretching that leads to inflammation (creating red stretch marks), followed by the breakdown of elastic fibers and collagen, which causes atrophy (white stretch marks). Even robust fibers can be affected by rapid or excessive body growth.

Additionally, several factors can contribute to the development of stretch marks, including:

  • Sudden weight gain (often with the "yo-yo effect")

  • Increased muscle mass (particularly in men)

  • Dietary choices - Anorexia- Pregnancy

  • Inadequate skin hydration (dry skin) Obesity

  • Breast implants Genetic predisposition Prolonged corticosteroid use

  • Contraceptive use

  • Synthetic hormone replacement.

Stretch marks can itch or sting, but generally, their initial symptoms are linear rosé or skin-colored lesions, or with a slight elevation. This can be considered the beginning of the formation of the so-called red stretch marks.

In the later stage, stretch marks are white, with varying thickness and width. They are very common on the buttocks, thighs, abdomen, and back.
